Configuring ETRN on the Server and the Client Essay

To set up ETRN, you need to configure the server and the client separately. The ISP usually configures the server side. The setup is simple if your ISP is using Exchange Server. Go to the Connections tab of the IMS property sheet. Under Message delivery, click E-Mail Domain. Add the customer’s domain name and select the Queue messages for ETRN check box, as you see inScreen 1. If you don’t check this box, the ISP server will immediately attempt to deliver messages even though the ETRN client is offline. Checking this box prevents unsuccessful retries and nondelivery reports (NDRs) back to the originator. ISPs that don’t use Exchange Servers can configure the Sendmail utility for ETRN capability. The ETRN client requires more complex configuration. First, configure when the ETRN client sends mail. If you’re using RAS, be sure you’ve configured the RAS client and a phone book entry pointing to your ISP before you begin. From Exchange Server, go to the IMS property sheet to configure your connector for ETRN dial-up. From the Dial-up Connections tab, which Screen 2 shows, choose the appropriate remote access entry from the Available connections window. Next, decide on a schedule for calling your ISP. As Screen 2 shows, you have several options, including transferring mail at specific intervals or whenever mail is queued up. Note that you don’t explicitly define when to close the connection. The IMS terminates the connection depending on the setting in the Time-out after X min window. This parameter refers to idle time; the connection closes after the number of minutes you specify have passed. Your ISP must be able to dequeue your inbound mail within this period, or the connection will close prematurely. The connection might close if the dequeue process doesn’t proceed in a timely fashion after you’ve established the connection with the ISP. You can accommodate a slow start of the dequeuing process by increasing the time value. You configure logon validation for the dial-up connection by clicking Logon Information on the Dial-up Connectors tab. On the screen that opens, enter your username, password, and domain (if appropriate). This information (which your ISP gives you) provides the credentials for ETRN to match against the server and provides security between the two servers. To configure ETRN to let your ISP send your mail to you, click Mail Retrieval to get to the screen that you see in Screen 3. Click Retrieve mail using ETRN. To specify the proper Internet domain, you can use the Routing property page (from the IMS property sheet) or hard-code your domain names by selecting Use these domains and entering domains in the window. The latter option signals the ISP to dequeue messages from this domain only. If you’ve defined subdomains, precede the domain name with an at (@) character to collect mail for all domains. Subdomains let you partition companies into operating units with separate email addresses. For example, the NCR.com Internet domain has several subdomains, such as daytonoh.NCR.com and columbiasc.NCR.com. If your ISP has defined separate hosts for inbound and outbound messages, you can select Send ETRN to specified host instead of outbound mail host and define the IP address of the inbound host. If your service provider uses the TURN command instead of ETRN, you can click Issue TURN after delivering outbound mail. If you use this option, your ISP might need to authenticate your identity, if the ISP has this functionality. You can configure these credentials (e.g., name and password) on the Security tab of the IMS property sheet. This authentication usually uses the AUTH LOGIN ESMTP extension to send the account and password on the outbound connection. If your ISP uses UNIX instead of Exchange Server, you can use the UNIX Sendmail application to dequeue messages from the ISP’s SMTP gateway for delivery to the ETRN client. To configure Sendmail, select Custom command to invoke a script that uses the Sendmail function. You enter the script in the window next to the option. For instance, the remote shell command (Rsh) causes Sendmail to run at the service provider after you’ve established a connection. For example, the syntax  Rsh I isp.com l logonalias â€Å"/user/lib/sendmail q R NCR.com† starts the remote shell, then connects to a service provider called ISP.com. The logon alias starts the shell at the ISP (this alias must match the rhosts file on the ISP). The rest of the command executes the remote shell and sends the queue to the specified domain (NCR.com). The final step in the client portion of ETRN setup is to configure your server to queue mail in the IMS for later transfer to your ISP via ETRN. On the IMS Connections tab, which Screen 4 shows, selectForward all messages to host under Message Delivery, and then enter your ISP’s IP address. Check the Dial using check box, and be sure the correct RAS phone book entry appears in the adjacent window.

Equal Rights for Androids and Humans The concept of equality among all people was, unfortunately, not â€Å"self-evident† until the passengers on the Mayflower proclaimed it in 1620. A section of the Mayflower Compact reads, â€Å"†¦and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute and frame such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions and offices†¦Ã¢â‚¬ . (Commanger, 23) Written in 1776, the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence states, â€Å"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (US Declaration Ind. This phrase echoes the same beliefs as those expressed in the Mayflower Compact. Efforts to achieve equality among all Americans have continued to this day. The concept of equality has not been ignored by Hollywood, either. The concept of equality has been a central theme in various popular films over the years. One such film is Bicentennial Man. The theme of Bicentennial Man challenges the viewer to question where they think the line of equality ought to be drawn. Throughout history, humans have struggled with this concept.Naturally, individuals desire to be the best, and they try to distance themselves from those who are not the same; the homeless, the handicapped, people from different cultures, or those that look different. The film approaches this idea in a different manner because Andrew, the android â€Å"star† of the film, is not a person. It takes Andrew a period of two hundred years (hence the name of the movie, Bicentennial Man) to convince the World Government that he did, in fact, have a soul and should be considered an equal. Columbus, Bicentennial Man) The film’s idea of android equality is not (yet) an issue needing to be addressed in American society. The film’s concept of equality does, however, resemble the real challenges of human equality faced by many Americans throughout history. At the start of the movie, it was established that Andre w only existed to serve and obey his owners, the Martin family. His only purpose was to obey the commands of and attend to the needs of this family. Jeremy Bentham, a political theorist, believes this is an example of the concept of utilitarianism.In simple terms, utilization is using an object (or people) â€Å"as a tool† to achieve a goal. (Nelson, 205). A word that could be used interchangeably with utilitarianism is, of course, slavery. Bicentennial Man evaluation of android equality is a clear reflection of the challenges of equal rights faced by many Americans throughout the history of the nation. In the film, Andrew Martin, the android, fought for 200 years in order to be declared equal to the humans he once served.In the real history of America, however, African-Americans fought for more than 300 years for equal rights as Americans. Despite their opposition, the NASA management proceeded with the take-off and what the engineers feared came to pass. Hot gases from Challenger's right-side rocket leaked through the faulty O-ring and led to the explosion of the spacecraft. Like the mythical Icaru... No matter what their real personal lives might have been - we look at them like icons, the chosen ones to at the juncture of history. And looking at a picture of them smiling, with their blue astronaut suits, and holding their space headgear - we think of how the human race have stretched democracy into space. We are gladdened that of the seven, two were women - one of them a non-specialist, one an African-American and one an American of Japanese descent. These seven on board Shuttle Mission 51L, the tenth of Challenger's orbit into space was to do something probably routine for astronauts -which was to carry some equipment like satellite and cameras to observe something so ordinary as Halley's comet (Greene p. 1). What was extraordinary and made it special was that it was the first time a teacher was going into space and she was to be there especially to teach the first outer-space classroom lesson. Sharon Christa McAuliffe, 37 at that time, was chosen from the ranks of 11,000 teachers across the country to fly on Challenger. Her often quoted line from her Challenger Disaster astronaut application form was "I watched the Space Age being born and I would like to participate" (NASA website).1 The commander of the crew was Francis Scobee, 47 who enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and originally trained as an engine mechanic but longed to fly (NASA website). In the recent past, justices have been appointed even after a tenure of 2 years. This has destabilized the Supreme Court as gaps have been left. Public trust has been lost and the minority does not see any need to seek a relief of the court. The attitudes and moods of many Supreme Court justices have been seen to shift regularly and significantly ov er time. Literature on public opinion on judicial decision making has suggested that judicial attitudes and changes in moods do reflect external social forces. However, attitudinal changes may be common among the justices as it is contrary thought. In the United States, the Courts mandate and the power to strike down the set laws and regulations expounds why this institution has received much criticism as an anti-democratic Court. An American scholar, Alexander Bickel from Yale, once supported this hypothesis and said that the Supreme Court was a deviant institution in the democracy of America (Rossum, 2001, p 56). It is an enemy of democracy as it exercises control against the prevailing majority which is contrary to the basics of democracy. At the beginning of the Republic, the Supreme Court was weaker than the president and the Congress. It observed a lot of care to win the faith of the public by passing only two federal laws between 1803 and 1857. The words of Justice Sandra Day Connor, that the judicial independence was under threat of influence by the powerful, have come to pass. Those who framed the U.S constitution expressed their reservations that the Supreme Court will one day be a threat to democracy (Yalof & Dautrich, 2013, 89). This is because it was seen as an institution that lacked money and soldiers to enforce its decrees. They also refuted the idea that the Court was inherently anti-democratic. If the Court would strike down the state and federal laws, it will be promoting democracy rather than thwarting it. The Court has been on the opposite side of the perceived will of those who framed the U.S constitution. In summary, the U.S citizens have accepted a large duty of the judicial branch in its undemocratic nature. The inherent mistrust of concentrated, seemingly unlimited authority, has given many American citizens a pause. A constitutional amendment, despite its complex nature of changing it, is welcome to reform the Supreme Court. Any inst itution, which is an enemy of democracy, is also an enemy of the people. Though its impossible to fully stop hacking you can make sure you minimize the risk significantly with the right resources. A big issue with security would be fraud and theft. According to the U.S. Department of Justice Statistics, identity theft is now passing up drug trafficking as the number one crime in the nation. (Itrc, 2006) To solve some of these solution the easy steps would be to makes sure to check every guests ID and credit card against each other and have a fake ID decoder behind every desk to insure that no one gets away with using someone elses credit card. Theft is also a big concern with guests that stay in hotels. Many hotels have an open-door policy that lets maids prop open doors for hours on end while they clean that floor. That leaves room wide open for anyone to just walk into a room and take whatever they want or rack up huge bills on movie rental or minibar items. According to a study done in 2003 many hotels have not changes there policies after the attacks of 9/11. Many hotels that were rated higher with security had already established good security and didnt need to make changes. (Myers, 2003) There is no base-line for hotel security so its hard to say if the standard went up after the September 11 attacks of 2001. Conclusion Most of the security issue seems to be that of theft, either of personal items or identity. To help solve the ongoing issue there are dozens of companies working to shut down the cyber-attacks of hotel databases around the world. Until then it is the job of the hotel to take every precaution necessary to insure that guest feel as safe and comfortable as possible while staying in their establishment. References

Handlin vs. McNeill Essay Although events in history occurred over a long span of time and development, history first became an academic subject a little more than 100 years ago (McNeill 12). Since then, a plethora of controversies appeared regarding how historians, scholars, and intellectuals should examine and analyze history. Among the initial methods of studying history was the scientific research method, or scientific source criticism, which fundamentally extracts valid, legitimate facts from a diverse range of historical sources. Throughout time, however, the facts derived from this method of historical study gradually altered, leading to a new method of historical study: using facts and combining them with opinions and goals to constitute personal interpretations. As Oscar Handlin zealously asserts, historians and scholars should provide a strict examination of history based on a chronological study of known and verifiable facts as opposed to using verifiable facts as the basis for their own interpretation, influenced by their own group, experiences, beliefs, and personal motives. Through implementing a strict examination of history, historians can successfully detect and eradicate bias in their writings, allow the government as well as individuals to gain an insight into the past in order to secure and progress the future, and grasp the magnitude of truth. First, because strict examination of history based on a chronology and conclusive evidence can aid in discerning bias from genuine fact, historians should utilize the scientific method of research. Although Oscar Handlin admits that historians are never totally free of bias (7), he does claim that removing facts from interpretations eliminates bias, opinionated statements, and fiction from history, which is supposedly the chief goal and use of history (Handlin 5). On the contrary, when scholars employ William McNeills method of investigating history through interpretation, biased and one-sided analyses emerge, and, therefore, scholars may elasticize actual truth to suit their purpose. Historians who use interpretation to depict history are likely to select facts to show that we-whoever we may be-conform to our cherished principles (McNeill 16). Consequently, a fusion between fact and bias results, distorting the truth and leading to ignorance. Take, for instance, the example of Christopher Columbus. When examined through strict examination based on chronology and evidence,  historians determine truths including the fact that Columbuss voyages increased Europes rate of expedition to the Americas and the fact that Columbus contributed to the horrifying genocide of Native Americans. These derived facts provide insight into two perspectives of Columbus, and so, it diminishes the threats of bias. However, when explored through interpretations to suit purpose or please the audience, historians exaggerate Columbuss prominence by omitting the negative perspective mentioned above and using overarching descriptions, verifying the detriments of bias. Essentially, the scientific method of research assists historians in limiting the bias and opinion used in their writing to produce exact facts that do not serve to please the audience. In conclusion, when historians adhere to a specific study of history founded on chronology and corroborative facts, they can locate truth amidst clouds of speculation, myth, opinion, and bias, and they can use this truth to advance the human race. Rummaging through the treasure chest of historical sources and only selecting the jewels of absolute truth can facilitate the process of abolishing partiality and attaining objectivity and allow humans to use the past as a tool for enhancing the future. Handlin aggressively proclaims, Truth is absolute; it is as absolute as the world is real (5). If historians truly possess profound feelings and support for the success of humanity, it is crucial that they acknowledge Handlins statement. If McNeills views are adopted and excessively used, however, absolute truth and its advantageous properties may be lost forever, masked by interpretations involving a blend of fact, fiction, and ideology. Interview With A Language Learner English Language Essay To begin with, I read my assignment to interview an English Language Learner. This seemed like it was going to be a challenge since I did not know an ELL. I shared this assignment with my husband. He told me there was a parent on my sons wrestling team who spoke Spanish. This seemed like a great idea so I went to the wrestling practice on Wednesday with my son. When I arrived I seen the lady talking, but was nervous about approaching her since I had never met her. Finally after about 10 minutes I walked over to her and introduced myself. Then I told her I needed to interview an English Language Learner for my college class. She told me she would be happy answer any of my questions. The person I interviewed was Marietta. Marietta was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on May 21, 1968 to Maritza Suarez and Angel Benero. She has two brothers and one sister. Spanish was the main language spoken in her home as a child. As a child she began learning English in the private preschool she attended. There she learned to read and write English. While I school learning came slow to Marietta since she was dyslexic and didnt learn to read or write until she was 13 years old. Textbooks were written in English in Puerto Rico. English is taught different in Puerto Rico than in Spain since it is close to America. Marietta married November 29, 1997 to Juan Navarro. They have three children. Two sons Jorge and Luis and a daughter Paola. Juan is in the United States Coast Guard. Jorge is the oldest. He is in the 12th grade. Academics are difficult for him while he is in ESE classes. Their son Luis is in the 3rd grade and suffers from Attention Deficit Disorder. Paola is a 6th grade and she is on the A/B honor roll. Only Jorge and Paola are able to speak Spanish and understand it. Luis can understand Spanish, but isnt able to speak it. Both English and Spanish are spoken in their home. As a family they watch both English and Spanish television shows. I have to declare this was a wonderful interview. Even though, I was nervous about interviewing someone I didnt know it was a pleasant experience. Marietta was very eager to share with about her family. She advised me when I teach ELL students it is helpful to use graphics with Spanish to English vocabulary. It was exciting to hear Marietta mention that she was attending Florida State College of Jacksonville to get a degree to be a Chef. For the summer term she was taking English Composition I. After she told me about her attending college I told her I would be happy to help her with the English if need me to. Questions In what country were born? When is your birthday? At what age did you learn to speak English? Was English spoken in your home as a child? Do you have trouble speaking the English Language? When did you learn to write English? Was English difficult for you to learn? Do you have any children? Does your husband speak English? What is the primary language spoken in your home? Can your children speak your native language and English? Is there any advice you would give teachers who are teaching English Language Learners? Multicultural Activity Title: Winter Holidays around the World Grade level 2nd grade Topic: Winter holidays are not celebrated the same everywhere. Summary: These 3 day lessons are designed to teach students about the culture of Mexico, Israel and China; and the winter holidays celebrated by their cultures. Students will be able to locate each country on the globe. Day 1 I will tell the students we are going to pretend to be world travelers for the next three days. We are going travel to Mexico, Israel, and China to learn about their Winter celebrations. Today we are going to visit Mexico. Does anyone know where Mexico is located? Lets find it on our globe. I want to tell you about Mexico before we read our books. We will learn that in Mexico their winter celebration is called Las Posadas. They start celebrating nine days before Christmas. They celebrate every night from December 16th to December 24th. Each night children and their families reenact the story of Mary and Joseph trying to find a place to stay for the night. Then finally they went to a home and were welcomed by the innkeeper. At this place there is a celebration on the final night of Las Posadas. The families and friends celebrate with special food and Mexican hot chocolate. There is a pià ±ata for the children. Now I will read some books about Mexico before we go to our centers. Read books to the class. The People by Bobbie Kalman Nine Days to Christmas by Maria Hall I would have three centers set up for the students. Role play center, pià ±ata center, and flag center. Role play center students would pretend they were Mary and Joseph looking for a place to stay. The students would take turns being Mary, Joseph and the innkeeper. Pià ±ata Center- Students would take turns adding newspaper dipped in glue to a balloon which has already been blown up. Flag Center- Students would color and label their flag of Mexico. Teacher would write on the board the colors and their meaning. Green=independence, white=purity, red=blood, eagle with snake=fight for independence. At the end of the day we will have a special drink Mexican hot chocolate which will have already been made using the recipe below Mexican Hot Chocolate 3 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate 6 cups milk 1/4 cup granulated sugar 2 teaspoons ground Mexican cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoons Mexican vanilla extract Using a sharp knife, break up chocolate squares into smaller pieces. In a medium saucepan, combine chocolate, milk, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Heat and stir until chocolate melts and milk is very hot.  Ã‚   Do not allow to boil. Add vanilla extract and beat until frothy with a rotary beater, or with an electric mixer on low speed. Pour Styrofoam cups. When the Pià ±ata is busted students can get the candy and put it I their backpacks to be eaten at home. Assessment Have students write an informative paragraph about Mexico and Las Posadas. Collect and grade paragraphs. Day 2 Today we are going to pretend to visit Israel. Does anyone know where Israel is located? Give students time to answer. Lets locate it on our globe. Would you like to know what winter celebration happens in Israel? I would be happy to tell you. In Israel they celebrate Hanukkah. This is a Jewish holiday. It is also called The Festival of Lights. We will find that this holiday is celebrated for eight days during the month of December. The eight day celebration is significant because when it was time to light the temple lamp a long time ago there was only enough oil to keep it lit for one day. Amazingly, the oil burned for eight days which gave them time to find more oil. For this reason, Jews celebrate Hanukkah for eight days by lighting candles in a menorah every night to honor the eight day miracle. A menorah is a candle holder which holds nine candles on of them is called the servant candle because the other are lit by it. After the candles are all lit there is a party to celebrate. Children play with dreidel while enjoying a favorite treat called potato latkes. A dreidel is a four sided tops. Potato Latkes are like potato pancakes. Now I want to read some books to you about Hanukkah. Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah by Susan Roth The Miracle of the Potato Latkes, A Hanukkah Story by M. Penn I would have three centers set up. The centers would be a game center, map center, and cooking center. Students would take turns going to each center. Game center -Students would make a dreidel from a pattern. A dreidel has four sides marked with Hebrew letters: Nun, Gimel, Hei, and Shin. These letters stand for the Hebrew phrase Nes Gadol Hayah Sham which means a great miracle happened there, referring to the miracle of the oil. Students would play the game after making their dreidel. The letters on the dreidel man Nit (nothing), gantz (all), halb (half) and shtell (put). Everyone puts in a bean. A person spins the dreidel. If it lands on Nun, nothing happens; on Gimel person gets all the beans; on Hei gets half the beans; and on Shin, you put a bean in. Game ends until someone has all the beans. Map center- Color and label map of Israel. Blue and white are the colors on the Jewish prayer shawl and the Star of David is the traditional symbol of the Jewish people. Cooking center will be manned by a parent volunteer. Recipe for Potato Latkes 3 cups Simply Potato hash browns 1 cup frozen chopped onions (thawed and drained)  ½ cup egg whites  ½ cup flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp each salt and black pepper Vegetable oil Directions: Mix hash browns with eggs, mix well. Add flour gradually while mixing until batter is doughy, not too dry. Add baking powder, salt and pepper. Mix well again. Then heat about  ½ inch of oil to medium high heat. Form the batter into thin patties about the size of the palm of your hand. Fry batter in oil. Flip when the bottom is golden brown. Place finished potato latkes on paper towels to drain. Students can enjoy this treat when it is warm enough to eat. Assessment Students will answer the following questions. This important holiday celebration begins about mid-January or mid-February and last about 15 days. It begins with New Years Eve and ends with the Lantern Festival at the full moon. Chinese New Years is celebrated with fireworks. It is believed that the Chinese invented fireworks thousands of years ago. Paint Center Students will each have a black piece of construction paper. They will put small drops of paint on to their paper and then blow the drops with a straw. Before the paint dries, they will sprinkle glitter on the picture. This will represent fireworks. Map Center Students will color and label map of China. Teachers will write on board. The red color of the flag symbolizes revolution. The large star symbolizes the Communist Party which rules China and the smaller represent the people of China. Creative Center Students will make a lantern. They will color a picture on their piece of 18 X 12 colored construction paper. Fold the paper lengthwise with the decoration out. Starting at the fold, make evenly spaced cuts about 1 apart, ending where you began. Teacher will draw ending lines for students. Open the paper and staple together the short edges. Stuff middle with yellow crumpled tissue paper. Staple a strip 1 X 6 construction paper to make handle. Add crepe paper streamers to bottom. Hang lanterns in the classroom. Also there was information on assessing, evaluating and reporting student progress. First, the strategies and instructional tips discussed the challenges which English Second Language students face. They have three challenges: trying to gain the knowledge need for various subjects, learning the English Language while developing the ability to interact with their peers. Teachers should remember that they are always role modeling the English language while teaching. In doing so they need to make sure their lessons are presented using various formats in order to encourage students to reflect on their knowledge so the can respond effectively in class. Next, a teachers use of language is important in the classroom. They should be cautious of their vocabulary they use since students might have trouble comprehending what is spoken. Idioms can especially present a problem with English Language Learners. A teacher should rephrase idioms or teach their meanings. ELLs would take the idiom literally instead of way its intended meaning. For example, If you tell the students to hit their books They might hit their books with their hands. Instead the meanings you want to convey is start studying or do your work. If idioms are going to be used in the classroom then as a teacher it would be good to have an idiom wall which gave the meanings for each. It would also be a good idea to clearly mark transition times during classroom activities which can prevent confusion to your ESL students to clearly indicate changes. Third, when a question is asked the English as a Second Language students needs to have time to process the question asked before responding. Usually they need to translate it into their first language, formulate the answer in their first language and then translate an approximate answer into English. It is also mentioned how as a teacher I need to teach the vocabulary words and their meaning for subjects such as biology which has words that are not regularly used in everyday communication. A great exercise to help with learning new vocabulary is to use a cloze exercise with the lesson since it will leave out important key word for students to fill in from the passage. A Cloze exercise can reinforce ESL students grasp of the content and new vocabulary. Students will also benefit from written instructions since they might have difficult processing oral information quickly enough to understand. When giving student homework those written notes or directions would be useful. Fourth, ESL students have the same range of abilities as others in the same population. However, some many require extra assistance in other areas. Some may demand consideration for disabilities such as visual impairments, hearing deficiency, lack of psychomotor skills, or certain talents or gifts. There could be ESL students with other requirements that may affect their learning. If a student was a refugee and has been traumatized in the past she might have the need for additional support and counseling. Fifth, you will find information about assessing, evaluating and reporting on student progress in this article. These are important and can be done in the students classroom to make it more comfortable. The evidence of how an ESL student is developing his language proficiency can be determined using short in class test. Avoid multiple choice assessments with ESL students because they involve excessive reading and usually depend on comprehension of slight meanings. ESL students also will need extra time for the test because as with most questions they need to process it into their first language, formulate the answer and translate it back to English before putting it on paper. If you want to check a students comprehension or to clarify a problem speak in their native language. Provide a translation of key words which might be difficult to explain in English. There is a need to find out what the students may know but, have difficult expressing in English. This additional support for th e ESL student is generally for a limited time. Lastly, teachers who have previously taught students with English as a second language have a list of helpful instructional materials. Some of these materials are dictionaries designed for learners of English, bilingual dictionaries, alphabet letters in print in cursive, and games to name a few. These items in a classroom will help students with English as a second language feel more comfortable and independent. There are five points which I found most interesting. The first one is that research states the more highly developed as students first language; the more successful they will be learning a second language. It has been proven; bilingual students who continue to improve their first language are more successful than those how focus entirely on acquiring English. These students also have higher self esteem when they know their first language is valued. Second, it is important how a teacher responds to students language errors. If a teacher is critical a student might be less eager to attempt to speak in English. Instead this article advises teachers to rephrase a students incorrect grammar in a way to provide positive feedback and to model correct usage without drawing attention to their error. For example if a students says Pig are dirty animal. You can respond, Yes, pigs are dirty animals Can you name another dirty animal? If a student continues with this same error then maybe you can work with him on correct subject verb usage. Third, the use of peer tutoring is a great method for teaching. A more advanced ESL student can help new ESL students. They know how hard it is to learn English as a second language. Many times students enjoy learning from their peers. Students also seem to be more open to share their frustrations with each other than with their teachers. The more advanced student can be the translator between the student and teacher when necessary. Forth, I liked the reminder that it can be exhausting and demanding performing all day in a second language. This is helpful to know because as a teacher I would not think of this since I am not bilingual. In addition, the fact that homework can take ESL students two to three times longer to complete because they need to first translate it into their first language, formulate it and then translate it back. Homework might also be frustrating to ESL students since they might not understand the directions. They might feel they had done enough work during the day. Also their parents would probably not be able to help them because they dont know English. Fifth, I like the list of instructional materials from teachers who have previously taught ESL students. This list will help make sure I have these resources available in my classroom for the students to use. More resources a student has to help translate words to English the less they will feel dependent on you the teacher or their classmates. I enjoyed reading this article which had a wealth of useful information for teachers of ESL students planning their classroom. As a new teacher I can benefit from the information in this article. This is an article I will place with other information which I will refer to frequently when I become a teacher. I went to the University of West Florida library database. The article I found was Language Use by Bilingual Special Educators of English Language Learners with Disabilities which was from the International Journal of Special Education. My reason for choosing this topic is that I presently work in a special education classroom. My degree which I am seeking is a Bachelors with a dual major in Exceptional Education (k-12th), Elementary Education (k-6th). This article is about examining the language use of five bilingual special education teachers of English language learners with disabilities which was done as an exploratory case. The data on the language used by the bilingual teachers was received from audio tapes, classroom observation and teacher interviews. Also included in this data was the frequency of the use of English and the other languages in the classroom. The teacher faces challenges when working with students at risk of academic failure. This is particularly difficult when the student has disabilities and is not a fluent English speaker. A teacher must be able to address students language and cultural differences along with their cognitive, emotional, and /or physical disabilities to set them up for maximum success. There is an increasing demand for special education teachers due to the increase of students indentified with disabilities and low retention these teachers. Consequently, this demand for teachers who prepared to work with students with different backgrounds with disabilities stresses the need to provide teachers preparation programs for preservice teachers and professional development opportunities for in-service teachers. This study was conducted in a large, urban school district which offered a vast range of educational programs to include those needed for students with disabilities and who speak English as a second language. Two schools were indentified because of their student population. At the first school, eighty-seven percent of the student body was Hispanic and eighteen percent of the students received special education. At the second school, ninety-five percent of the student body was Hispanic with fourteen percent receiving special education services. Tow teachers from the first school and three from the second school volunteered to be part of the case study. All five teachers were female Hispanics who were employed fulltime as special education teachers. Three of the five teachers had ESOL endorsement but, only two of the five had both special education and ESOL certification. The results from the data collection revealed that the teachers were both using English and Spanish for instruction with their English Language Learners with disabilities. However, further analysis of the data indicated overall that teachers were using English ninety percent of the time while teaching. Spanish was primarily used to clarify instructions with those who did not have fluent English. It was also used to redirect students to their given task as well as to praise and reprimand them. Each of the five teachers felt the use of Spanish for instruction was positive. They planned on using Spanish when the need arose. Furthermore, these teachers expressed they had an advantage when communicating with parents since they were bilingual. Many of the parents were not fluent in English. The teachers ability to speak the native language of the parents helped form better communication. If the students native languages are used for teaching strategies and instruction it can encourage language development because it builds on what they already know. Clearly, when the students native language is used to introduce new concepts and give explanation this will facilitate learning. Therefore, the result of this exploratory case study is the beginning attempt to lend information about the issue of using native language for instruction for children with disabilities. Research explains how special education teachers can use bilingual skills while working with English Language Learners and how their learning is affected by language based differentiated instruction. The findings from this case study indicates that teacher preparation programs should include how teachers can incorporate students native language along with English to accommodated their cognitive, emotional and /or physical needs. In my opinion, this article mentions some important findings from its exploratory case study. To begin with are the qualifications of the five teachers. Only two of the five teachers had both special education certification and ESOL endorsement. These are important certifications when your student population consists of students with disabilities and English Language Learners. Next, teachers using English for instruction with limited use of the students native languages while in the classroom. Their native language is needed as the article states at the end to summarize complex concepts. Lastly, it would be difficult for teachers to accommodate students with disabilities and limited English proficiency without proper training. Certifications are important but, training is imperative for teachers to be equipped to instruct their students. Everyone deserves an education despite their ability or disability 5) Language Modes Activities Reading- Partner reading- Students take turns reading to each other. This website has stories that are read to you. You can read along as you listen. Writing- Daily writing in a journal. Write a story about a picture from a book. Have students write down the directions needed to do an activity. Examples: walk to the library, cook something, play a game. The teacher will give students a writing prompt. They will write a detailed paragraph answering why, when, where, how, who questions. Speaking- Role playing- Students pretend with another student that they are discussion their day with their mom or dad. Show and tell- students bring in an item from home. They get in front of the classroom and talk about their item. Other classmates can ask questions. Example a child brings in a sharks tooth to share with the class. Be the teacher for 15 minutes- Have the students take turns during the week being the teacher for 15 minutes each. They will teach the class about something they know how to do. For example, a student from China could give a lesson about using chopsticks. Another student could give a lesson about braiding hair. Listening- Play a game of Simon Says- students need to hear the person say Simon says, Touch your head. If they touch their head when someone says ;Touch your head. They are out because Simon didnt say it. The game continues until only one person is left. They are declared the winner and now they are Simon. Listen to books that have been recorded on a compact disc. Teacher can have questions for students to answer while they listen. Students will listen to songs which are used in the classroom. They can also sing along. 6) Graphic Organizers: Venn Diagrams I could use this when comparing two different items. For example, I could compare the traditions of families in Mexico and America. The right circle would be Mexico, left circle America. Tone and Point of View in William Faulkner’s The Unvanquished :: Unvanquished Essays

Tone and Point of View in William Faulkner’s The Unvanquished Everyone at some point in his or her lives have looked back upon their past and recalled either a pleasant or unhappy memory that brings tears to their eyes. In the novel â€Å" Unvanquished William Faulkner creates a character named Bayard who recalls a time when he was boy during the period of the civil war. Although Faulkner gives readers little information about Bayard we learn several things about his life during that time and about the people who were present in his life. Faulkner throughout the story of the Unvanquished used several writing techniques in allowing readers to know that the main character is a grown man looking back upon his childhood. First by the tone he sets throughout the story and last writing the story in the first person. Setting the tone to a particular piece of writing can be a very difficult task one which Faulkner never has much trouble with. While reading the â€Å"Unvanquished† a reader never loses sight of the feelings and desires of the mai n character present in this short story at any given time. Due to the fact that this story is written in the first person point of view readers are not given much opportunity to truly know the thoughts and feelings of the other characters present in this story also. For example, in the chapter titled Ambuscade readers are introduced to Bayard father John Sartortis. Who appears to be a kind, hardworking man who fulfills all of his manly duties as a father, son and boss? But upon closer examination of the text the reader discover this characterization to be somewhat false because although Bayard see his father in this manner one of his slaves does not. When leaving the Sartortis property Loosh a slave ask Miss Rosa about the whereabouts of her son and why he wasn’t around to provide and take care of his family during a time when they needed him most?

The anonymous narrator of Ellison's novel begins by assuring the reader that he is, in fact, a real person and is not invisible in the Hollywood sense of the term, but, rather, invisible "simply because people refuse to see" him for who he really is (3). The actions of both blacks and whites toward the anonymous narrator of the novel during his search for identity lead him to this conclusion. The narrator begins the story of his realization of his invisibility at the end of his high school days, as an intelligent and diligent student in an unidentified southern U.S. state in the early part of the 20th century. Upon giving an excellent speech about the role humility plays in progress, prominent members of the community invite him to recite the speech once again "at a gathering of the town's leading white citizens" (17). At the meeting, though, the high-ranked members of the community force the narrator and other black boys to participate in what the narrator terms a "battle royal," in which they fight each other and attempt to pull fake plastic coins from an electric rug. The narrator proceeds to win the "battle royal," and presents his speech to the wealthy men (17). Throughout the delivery of his speech, they mock and harass him, failing to see who he really is. The school's superintendent then rewards him with a scholarship to college. Because of the great reward and th e doors the reward opens up, the narrator accepts the subhuman treatment as normal. Still a weak character, he allows people to... ...s dramatically. To our understanding this is not true there are heroes in our world, Webster dictionary defines hero as a male figure that displays superior courage and strength or a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal.Heroes are everywhere we just need to look further and find the hero within the people we know personally or people we have heard about. A hero is strong and looked up to and admired by many or only a few. The Ordinary Heroes Throughout a person’s life we can experience many obstacles, challenges, and hardships; that we sometimes face alone. There is always tha t one person that we seek for guidance, inspiration or just to save us from anything. To some they are parents and grandparents to others they are called the ordinary heroes.In fact an ordinary hero truly can be anyone that appeals to be hard-working, loving and dedicated. That is why parents and grandparents are classified as ordinary heroes, in the eyes of young children they watch as their loved ones love, support, push and make plans for them to have a better life. It’s not easy growing up not having that one person that has your best interest at heart, but to have someone to struggle to make sure that their children and families have the best out of life is an amazing experience. As a son grows up and wants to follow in is father’s footsteps because while he was younger he watched how his father made everything possible come to life for him. On the web site â€Å"my hero†, a young man wrote something special about his father and he quoted â€Å"as I was wa ndering along a path trying to figure out what doors were safe to enter, and learning that I would need to be true to me, no matter the entry point, my father was making sure that any door I ended up at was unlocked and open† (Meyers 1995). What about a daughter who watchers her mother go through any and everything to make sure that she have the best and only the best.Of course, the grandchildren that live with their grandparents as they step in to take care of them, showing them that we are here to make sure that everything is just fine. Telling old stories about when they were young and how they lived their lives to make it easy for us. Since the day we were born, our parents and grandparents have inspired us, giving us wisdom, supported us and protected us, they are the most amazing people in our lives; they know what they want out of life and are not afraid to pursue their goals to make our lives worth living.Unsung Hero Lives worth living that were the unsung hero comes t o mind. An unsung hero is defined as a person who makes a substantive ye unrecognized contributions or a person whose bravery is unknown or unacknowledged. There is a multitude of people in the world today who are true unsung heroes that don’t even worry about getting the recognition that they are due; they just do whatever they can to make other people lives amazing. Wow, there is a person who is seen every day struggling with what is not an everyday occurrence.She works hard every day and through something that most individuals will fall to Chemotherapy. The metamorphosis she goes through with the ever changing symptoms experience within her outer and inner appearance is life altering. To look at her, no one would know or even think she was ill. She is also managing type II Diabetes and the treatment for her cancer interfered with her maintenance of her Diabetes. One would never know because she smiles and encourages everyone she engages with. She is an Unsung hero a hero t hat is no in the news, on the radio or even given an award too.This hero is not recognized by her family as doing anything special because they have become accustomed to now she pushes and continue to do for others. No one speaks of this hero in their political plat forms or when petitioning for the next best thing in the world to be among their personal items. This unsung hero is truly a hero for all times. Beyond the Story Book Remember reading or hearing while growing up about the people in story books, thinking about how everyone in them was so heroic and we wanted to be just like them.However, one that comes to mind is a story about a man name Robin Hood. Yes, he was an outlaw who robbed from the rich to give to the poor. On the web site â€Å"The bold outlaw† it gives a brief summary on Robin Hood’s life. â€Å"Robin Hood was a Saxon noble, and was forced into a life of banditry, using his cunning ways and eager servant’s, they helped themselves to the ki ngs gold and jewels, that were levied from the oppressed peasants† (Wright 2004). Although some may argue Robin Hood’s actions are not heroic.Perhaps, the better adjective to describe him would be brave. He was brave to risk his life with such a selfless act; taking from those with more to give to those with less. I don’t know of a modern day real life person that would do such a thing, give to the less fortunate by taking from those with fortunes and expect nothing in return but the satisfaction of knowing he helped someone is pay enough. Now, some may say what he did was wrong. I agree that stealing is wrong, however; his intentions were good.While displaying courage and sacrifice, this helpful act that Robin Hood did, has shown us how to treat the less fortunate with compassion and respect by returning to the oppressed what belonged to them was heroic enough to us. The Realistic Hero Finally, as we went through years in school learning about the history of our superior country, there was one man that was so real that he became the hero of all heroes. This great man was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. , a man of intelligence and willingness; that brought people everywhere together no matter what the cause or reason.With his speeches, marches and taking on different civil right tasks, he showed us and the world that no matter what race, gender or background, we are important. On the web site â€Å"more or less† it gives this great statement about Dr. King, â€Å"We pay tribute to Dr. King, the man who has never abandoned his faith in his unarmed struggle he is waging, who has suffered for his faith, who has been imprisoned on many occasions, whose home has been subject to bomb attacks, whose life and the lives of his family have been threatened, and who nevertheless has never faltered† (Harris 2008).His efforts were so outstanding that it led to the March on Washington in 1963 where he delivered his famous â€Å"I Have a Dreamâ⠂¬  speech, Dr. King being the youngest to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his hard work to end racial segregation and discrimination. On April 4, 1968 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. , was assassinated in Memphis Tennessee. To give back to him for all that he has done for us we celebrate his life as a federal holiday on Jan 15. Dr. King was indeed a true hero because of his persistence and forward thinking that helped to begin equality for all.In conclusion, there are many types of heroes in the world today and that throughout life someone believed that they were heroes to them. No one can go through life without an ordinary, storybook or realistic hero in their life. Of course, everyone has their own opinion about what and who can be recognized as a hero, but in our eyes these heroes within this essay are real enough to be considered as heroes. Many of us don’t realize what a hero can be characterized as without using technology, if we step outside technology and look within ourselves to see the true hero that lives within we too can become a hero to someone.Today there are people who we call heroes, taking on the roles and responsibilities to show true leadership. 1. Within the United States, especially in Southern California, an individual's appearance is crucial because it is used to make a first impression. A person is judged by what they wear and how they look. For example, it is probable that many people would perceive a person wearing ratty clothes as uneducated and irresponsible while a person looking pristine in a designer ensemble is assumed to be intelligent and successful. In every city, there are multiple fashion brands with different styles and ranges of apparel and accessories.Every season, new styles and designs are created which influence society. It appears as if more types of clothing exist than the actual number of people. With so many different alternatives of fashion, the fashion industry is trying to please too many customers with variety. There are currently various styles to choose from, and the clothes people wear categorize or label them long before they realize it. The three fashion brands that will be analyzed exten sively are Chanel, Nike, and Hot Topic. These brands have apparel but are completely different in their target audience.Chanel is a prestigious high-fashion brand; Nike is a popular athletic line; Hot Topic is musically and artistically edgier with a smaller target audience between the three. With these apparel brands, a person wearing each would be labeled or even stereotyped.
